Make It Happen Tipsheet
Career Management and Life Balance

Plant a seed and something will grow

If you are reading this on the day that it is published, then I have a secret to share with you. I came up with the idea for today's tipsheet last month. Then, about two weeks before "today", I wrote the Tip. I edited it the next week. And then I used a nifty feature to have it go "live" today.

While it might not appear obvious, I planted a seed, watered it, and eventually it grew. This concept is a powerful reminder of a key career success factor. Some things (business acumen, analytical ability, relationship skills, etc) take time to germinate. Planting your seeds early and often will add to your market value, and therefore your career success:

  • Plant the seed of education: Take that first course that will lead to a professional certification.
  • Plant the seed of an idea: Get feedback from your colleagues on a new approach to an old problem.
  • Plant the seed of involvement: Find a way to contribute your expertise to a not-for-profit; the skills you learn and the contacts you make will be invaluable.
  • Plant the seed of possibility: Let your manager know of your interest in a new project, or new responsibilities.
  • Plant the seed of growth: Try something completely new, either on the job, in the community, or with your family.

This week's action item: Plant a seed of your choosing. You never know how it will turn out, but one thing is certain: if you never plant anything, nothing will grow.
