Translating Knowledge to Action

Conversation Starters

The internet is called many things: the web, the 'net, and even "internet explorer". Others refer to it as the greatest reference book... or the greatest waste of time. But given the popularity of Social Media, it is also the world's greatest conversation. You can listen in, ask a question, or answer someone else's. For entertainment this interaction is addictive. If you're hoping to achieve something specific - for your business or in your career - your interaction needs to be specific, and intentional.

To test an idea or to find the answer to one of your questions, here's where you might start:

  • Tweet your question
  • Ask your Facebook friends
  • Participate in a LinkedIn discussion group
Then, check the various question sites:
  • Research existing answers on Yahoo answers, Askville, etc.
  • Search within LinkedIn Groups and LinkedIn Answers
  • Search on Google
  • Search on YouTube, Vimeo, Blip.tv, etc
Finally, let your community know what you've found:
  • Blog about it in your personal or corporate blog
  • Tweet

This week's action item:

The beauty of the internet is that it is both a place where conversations take place - as well as a searchable repository for those conversations. When you want to test an idea this week, don't immediately bring up Google. Instead, use your Social Media connections to get more direct perspective. Not only will you get a more meaningful perspective, but you when you "report back" your findings to your network, you'll be adding value - to the internet, and to yourself.
